Develop a Staff Restorative Justice Team

  • Outcomes

    At the end of this training, the school community will have a Staff Restorative Justice team that will be stewards of the work in the years ahead.

  • Modality

    The 3-day training is held in-person at or near the school community. The ongoing consultation is conducted virtually.

  • Materials

    All participants will be provided a comprehensive workbook and supplemental reading materials.

  • Before The Training

    Before the training, we will work with the school community to:

    • Assess school climate and culture

    • Assemble RJ team

    • Create pathways to collect and evaluate data

    • Identify dates for RJ Team 3-day training

  • During the Training

    With embedded opportunities to experience various restorative justice practices and elements central to restorative justice (i.e, relationship-building, joy, critical connections), participants will learn the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to be restorative justice practitioners in schools.

    At the end of the 3-day training experience, participants will be able to:.

    • Define restorative practices in education and understand the restorative justice in education framework

    • Compare the punitive approach and the restorative justice in education framework

    • Explore how restorative justice creates more equitable learning environments

    • Explore the myths and realities of restorative justice in education

    • Design a circle for Teaching and Learning

    • Facilitate a restorative conversation

    • Explore how being a “warm demander” is a restorative practice

    • Diagram different components of the circle

    • Create a script for welcome circle, support circle, and conflict/harm circle

    • Determine appropriate restorative responses to different scenarios

    • Reflect upon their roles to create change and healing in education

    • Build an implementation plan for their school community

  • After the Training

    After the training, the Staff RJ Team will receive support and consultation from our team. We will:

    • Meet with RJ Team 2x/month (virtually)

    • Mentor RJ Team as they implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 RJ circles
